Week 5 Reading Responses

You know what to do.

Hunger: Facts and Figures

Hunger is on the decline around the world. In some places, like Latin America, it's down sharply. But there are a few places around the world where hunger is on the rise: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, North Korea, and Cote d'Ivoire. Not surprisingly, they're mostly places with a recent history of conflict. Here are some links to interesting food/hunger information: World Food Programme Hunger map: http://www.wfp.org/hunger/map Some facts and figures from the same site: http://www.wfp.org/hunger/stats And the World Hunger Education Service facts: http://www.worldhunger.org/articles/Learn/world%20hunger%20facts%202002.htm

Reading Responses Week 2

You can post your responses here. Feel free to respond to someone else's post if you think it's the best way to do so. Remember:
- put your name on the post so I know who gets credit.
- a response needs to be more than 3 sentences to be substantial enough to get credit.

Alternately, you may turn them in during class tomorrow.

Thanks!

Things are getting interesting in Mali

Mali is, of course, a landlocked West African state which was colonized by France. The northern part, which includes the legendary city of Timbuktu (and was part of a series of great West African Islamic states), is dominated by Tuareg, Berbers, and the like. There's been a rebellion there for some time; they've now taken over most of the north and declared independence as Azawad. No country or external organization has recognized them.... yet.  Here's a quick article about the situation: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/10/all-hail-azawad/?hp.
